- اگر a یک عملگر خطی کراندار روی فضای هیلبرت h باشد، آنگاه به شرطی که a خودالحاق باشد، برای هر بردار x در فضای h مقدار <.ax,x>. مثبت است و لذا a را عملگر مثبت می نامیم.
